Top Tips for Weight Loss From an Advanced Certified Coach
Despite what the diet industry will have you believe, weight loss can actually be incredibly simple.
In my Weight Loss for Women Who Love Food program, I keep the process as easy and straightforward as possible. I want you to focus on your LIFE, not on spending your time preparing special “diet” meals, weighing and measuring your food, calculating up all the calories and points, and endlessly tracking it all in an app. What a waste of your precious time and mental energy.
I keep weight loss simple so that it doesn’t take over your whole life. Through coaching, you learn how to be that “normal” eater you’ve always envied (we all have that friend, right??) so that you can enjoy all the foods you love AND reach your ideal weight.
Here are my top tips for getting it done:
1) Don’t snack throughout the day – wait until your body shows signs of true physical hunger, THEN enjoy your meal.
When you notice the urge to eat something, first take a moment to check in with your body. Do you just want to eat, or is your body sending signals that it actually needs food?
Waiting for true physical hunger before eating is a critical component of losing weight without dieting. You can still lose weight while enjoying all the foods you love, as long as you wait until your body is ready for food rather than eating by the clock or mindlessly snacking.
It’s not that you can’t have the foods you love (which makes you feel deprived and restricted). You can TOTALLY have all the things you’re craving….just as soon as your body lets you know that it’s ready to eat. That simple shift allows you to eat the foods you truly enjoy AND lose weight at the same time.
2.) Stop when you feel physically satisfied, not stuffed.
The second critical piece to losing weight while enjoying all the foods you love is stopping when you’re feeling like you’ve had ‘enough’ food, but are not yet super full.
I call this the +2 or “Satisfied” stage on The Hunger Scale (Don’t have your copy handy? Revisit it by clicking HERE!).
The +2/Satisfied stage is the satiety sweet spot. If you were Goldilocks, this stage would be your “just right” - you've enjoyed your food, your body got enough physically, and having a few more bites would make you feel just a tiny bit uncomfortable.
+2 feels light, you still have plenty of energy, the food doesn't feel heavy or uncomfortable in your stomach. You're physically satisfied, and you could easily make it 3-4 hours until your next meal.
Learn how to stop at the +2 stage, and you’ll be able to cook and enjoy all the fun recipes you love, grab dinner and drinks with friends, never miss another fun food-centric get-together AND lose weight.
3) Question your thoughts
Did you know that your brain is the most important weight loss tool you have?
It’s true, and that means that THE most important tip I can give you is to question your thinking.
Thoughts aren’t facts, friends. They’re just sentences that pass through your brain.
Some thoughts are helpful and useful (“I like being able to afford food and housing, so I should keep showing up for work”) and some thoughts create false roadblocks between us and our goals (“I can’t possibly lose weight when life is this stressful” – this one was my go-to before I found weight loss coaching.)
Questioning your thoughts is the magic sauce of weight loss. When I questioned the thought “I can’t possibly lose weight when life is this stressful” (which had me face down in whatever DoorDash could deliver quickest every time), I was able to ask myself if that thought was actually true.
When I questioned whether my thought was even true, I was able to shift it to “I wonder what small things I can do to lose weight even though life feels stressful right now.” And then EVERYTHING changed.
I started taking small steps to lose weight like following my Hunger Scale, drinking more water, and reminding myself of my goals when cake seemed like the answer to all my problems. And I started to prove to myself that weight loss was totally possible, no matter what else was going on in my life.
Start catching those sentences that pass through your brain. What are you thinking? Question those thoughts. Remind yourself that thoughts aren’t facts.
Ask yourself – is this thought even true? How might it NOT be true? Will this thought HELP my progress or keep me from reaching my goals? And what else could I be thinking instead?
And there you have it. Those three tips will get you on your way to losing weight right now without having to give up a single food you love.
