Here’s one of my top tips for losing weight WHILE eating what you love.
Don’t get too hungry.
It sounds basic, but it’s a HUGE part of unlearning the habit of overeating.
And it can be a hard one if you’ve been on restrictive diets in the past.
When we’re trying to eat as little food or as few calories as possible, we’re essentially starving ourselves. We aren’t “allowed” to have enough food on diets, so we learn to push hunger for as LONG as we can stand it to make it through the day on so few calories.
But this always backfires.
Have you ever held your breath for an uncomfortably long time? When you finally do get air, you have no control – your body gulps as much oxygen as it can as fast as it can.
Getting too hungry does the exact same thing – when you finally let yourself eat, you’re HANGRY and STARVING. This is when we find ourselves wolfing down our food as fast as possible to try to get out of the discomfort of being WAY too hungry.
In that state, it’s nearly impossible to eat with control (and to stop when you’re satisfied not stuffed).
We almost always eat WAY more than our body needs when we start a meal in a state of extreme hunger.
But it makes sense that we would develop the habit of pushing hunger as far as we can when that’s what the restrictive diets we’ve been on our entire lives TELL us we should do to lose weight.
Instead, I want you to totally flip that habit on its head.
In my Weight Loss for Women Who Love Food program, I highly recommend that my clients never get *too* hungry.
Instead, I encourage them to start eating when they’re what I call “Pleasantly Hungry”.
Pleasantly Hungry is not uncomfortably hungry.
Pleasantly Hungry is when you’re feeling true physical hunger – you’re ready and eager to eat, but not HANGRY, panicky, or frantic.
From THIS place, we have WAY more power over when we stop eating. We can savor and enjoy our food without inhaling it.
We can eat with intention and control.
It makes it SO much easier to slow down and recognize when we might be approaching the state or satisfied not stuffed.
We make it way easier not to OVEReat when we don’t let ourselves get to the point of being OVERLY hungry.
