How to Make It EASY to Handle Urges to Overeat

Let’s talk about how to have a better experience when you decide not to overeat.

Even though you could be making daily plans full of food you absolutely love and are excited to eat, losing weight while eating all the food you love means you’re going to have to stop when your body signals to you that it’s SATISFIED not stuffed.

The Hunger Scale Tool shows you exactly how to do this. If you need help figuring out how to use it, you can:

  • Book a Free Discovery Call, which I HIGHLY recommend you do. On the call, I’ll show you how you can use the Hunger Scale to start losing weight today, without having to give up any of the foods you love. To book your free call, click ---- >>> HERE <<< ----

  • You can also download my Free Guide, which gives you tons of great info on understanding and using The Hunger Scale. Check that out by clicking ---- >>> HERE <<< ----

And, as you use the incredible Hunger Scale and practice eating just what your body needs rather than WAY more than it needs, you still might find yourself having urges to overeat. That’s totally normal.

But sometimes our brains can get REALLY loud during these urges. It might send up thoughts like:

  • Just a little won’t matter

  • You were really good today, you deserve it

  • I’ll just try again tomorrow

  • I don’t care about weight loss right now, I just want to eat

Sound familiar? My brain is a master at offering me thoughts like that.

And, when it does, you can either make the experience harder on yourself or much, much easier.

You can do that by either RESISTING the urge. Or by simply ALLOWING it to be there.

Resisting the urge to overeat feels terrible. You’ll know you’re resisting it if you find yourself getting mad at the feeling, fighting with it, pushing against it, or trying to wish it away. This is usually accompanied by thoughts like:

  • I hate this

  • This is unbearable

  • Why does this always happen to me?

  • This shouldn’t be happening

  • I can't stand this

  • I wish I could just get rid of this feeling

Resisting feels like hard work because it intensifies the dramatic story our brain is creating around the urge or desire for food. It takes an already uncomfortable feeling and makes it SO much worse.

But simply Allowing the urge to be there while you go about your day is 100x easier. Allowing the urge just looks like opening up to and getting to know the physical sensations in your body as you feel and process the emotion.

Calmly acknowledge “Oh, this is an urge. It’s not a problem to be solved, and it will pass right by if I don’t fight with it.”

You can be curious about how it feels in your body. Does it feel subtle or intense? Where are the sensations located, and what do they feel like? Is it rushy energy? Restless? Nagging? Pulling? Just calmly observe it. You will often find that the physical experience of it isn’t nearly as bad as the drama your brain wants to create about it.

As you welcome the feelings in, you simply notice and feel them in your body as they pass through you. The thoughts might look more like:

  • This may be uncomfortable, but I can totally handle this

  • I’m willing to feel these emotions to get me closer to my goal

  • I can do hard things

  • This emotion will pass on its own eventually, I don’t have to eat to get rid of it

  • Every time I do the work of allowing urges, I get stronger

  • An urge is just a feeling, it can’t make me react

If you feel and process your urges by Allowing them rather than Resisting them, they’ll dissipate in about 90 seconds. And, once those 90 seconds are over, you’ll get to feel SO proud. It's totally worth it.
