Doable weight loss > drastic weight loss

Most people think weight loss happens in one big decision.

“I’m giving up carbs”

“I’m “eating clean” until vacation”

“I’m joining Weight Watchers….again….”

It makes sense that we would think that….it’s what the diet industry has always told us. No pain, no gain, right?

Wrong, actually.

Weight loss doesn’t happen in one big decision, it happens in the millions of tiny decisions we make all day every day.

That might sound intimidating (I have to make MILLIONS of decisions??) but it’s actually really good news.

It means you have millions of chances to make choices that lead you closer to your goals. All day every day we’re given chance after chance to lose weight.

So even if we screw some of them up, we can still totally make progress. Isn’t that exciting??

It means we don’t have to be ‘perfect’, or change EVERYTHING about who we are and how we eat and become an entirely different person overnight to find success in weight loss.

It’s actually the complete opposite.

Because little decisions snowball into POWERFUL results. If you can commit to doing just a tiny bit better, but doing that over and over again, day after day, you get closer and closer to your goal without it feeling hard at all.

And making tiny improvements rather than HUGE changes makes it so much easier to get buy-in from your brain.

When the change is tiny, there’s less to talk yourself out of. Making the change feels doable, not painful.

I lost 35lbs in 2019 and have kept it off ever since because I made a bunch of tiny changes. And when those started to feel easy, I made more. That’s it.

So, what little changes can you commit to making this week?

Here are some examples of little decisions I made on my way to weight loss:

  • I didn’t stop getting ice cream with my kids, but I did start ordering the kid size – it’s totally enough, and then I got to enjoy ice cream AND weight loss (not one or the other)

  • I drank just a couple more ounces of water each day (until I got all the way up to 64oz/day)

  • At dinner, I made my portion of veggies just a little bit bigger and my portion of carbs just a little smaller

  • I kept some easy, tasty frozen meals in my freezer for super busy days, so I wasn’t tempted to say ‘f-it’ and get *all* the takeout

  • I had some fruit AND some chips for a snack, so I got some fiber and nutrients alongside something just for fun

  • I gave myself permission to stop eating when I felt satisfied rather than needing to clean my plate every time

  • I put a portion of chips and salsa on my plate rather than just eating them out of the basket

You’ll notice none of these changes involve feeling left out or deprived, cutting out entire categories of foods, or spending any time starving. They’re just small, consistent steps in the direction of the person you want to be.

Small changes make weight loss feel easy. And when it feels easy AND you’re eating the food you love, the process becomes fun. Which makes it sustainable and permanent.
