Accelerate Your Weight Loss With This Little Shift

Someone said something to me that stopped me in my tracks last week.

She said: “Every time the number on the scale stalls, that’s my invitation to remind myself that I’m in this for the long haul”

Isn’t that brilliant? Let it sink in for a minute….

Even when she’s not seeing the success she wants on the scale, she uses it to remind herself that she’s playing the long game.

That one week of disappointing data can’t derail her.

Instead of totally beating herself up, she uses it as a trigger to remind herself that she has her own back.

How do you think that impacts her experience of weight loss?

Think about it….most of us see a number on the scale that we’re not happy with and we do the opposite. Most of us tend to spiral out with thoughts like:

  • This is going to take forever

  • I screwed up again

  • Something must be wrong with me

  • Why can’t I just do what I know I’m supposed to do?

  • This is so hard

  • I’m never going to be able to figure it out

Think about how those thoughts FEEL.

If you’re anything like me, those thoughts might make you feel:

Discouraged

Frustrated

Impatient

Hopeless

But one of the first things I teach my clients in coaching is that our thoughts generate our feelings, and our feelings motivate our ACTIONS. Anything we do or don’t do is because of how we feel.

So when we think totally unhelpful thoughts like those in the list above, and we start to feel discouraged, frustrated, impatient, and hopeless, guess which actions we take…

  • We beat ourselves up

  • We tear ourselves down

  • We ruminate, catastrophize, spin out in self-pity or self-loathing

  • We believe that we’re total failures while blocking out ALL the evidence of what’s working

  • And then we overeat to get relief from all the drama in our brains

We push ourselves farther and farther from our weight loss goals because we make one little number on the scale mean SO much about who we are and what we’re capable of achieving.

We CREATE the drama with our minds. And then we feel terrible. And then we act in a way that gets us the OPPOSITE of what we truly want

But what if, instead, we used the number on the scale to remind us that we’re in this for the long haul??

That one week of disappointing data DOESN’T mean that we’re broken, or weak, or doomed never to achieve our goals. That it’s just some information we can use to learn and move forward.

If you start thinking thoughts like “I’m in this for the long haul” or “I can learn from this and move forward” or “I have my own back no matter what” – how do you FEEL?

Compassionate?

Curious?

Capable?

Supported?

From THOSE emotions, how would you show up for your weight loss?

What actions would you take?

What would you believe about what’s possible for you?

What would you try to get the scale moving again?

These are the shifts I help my clients make so that they finally stop giving up on themselves.
