The Lies You’re Telling Yourself About Weight Loss
Did you know that the first thought your brain offers you isn’t necessarily the *truth*?
This is a 🤯 moment for my new clients - when I explain to them that their automatic thoughts AREN’T facts….they’re just the first draft of the story.
And, hey, sometimes the first draft of the story is amazing - when that’s the case, keep it.
If your first draft sounds like…
“I can totally figure this out”, or “I’m just going to keep showing up for myself, even when I have setbacks” or “I’m committed to being kind and compassionate to myself, no matter what the scale says”
…by all means, keep those thoughts.
What we think affects how we feel, and how we feel affects what we DO.
So those thoughts bring up feelings like determination, curiosity, commitment, and self-compassion.
And those feelings drive incredible actions like learning from slipups and setbacks, trying new things to serve your weight loss each day, and speaking kindly to yourself whether you’re losing or not.
These are the kinds of thoughts, feelings, and actions we work towards cultivating ON PURPOSE when we coach together. There’s no way you can’t achieve your weight loss goals with a mindset like that.
But, often, clients don’t start out with thoughts like that.
I often hear first drafts like this from brand new clients:
“I can’t focus on myself during back-to school time - it’s too stressful”
“There’s no way I can lose weight with all these snacks in the house”
“I just can’t stop overeating no matter what I try”
Clients come to me believing that these thoughts are true, but they’re totally not.
And, when you learn to *question* rather than immediately believe your brain’s first draft, weight loss magic starts to happen.

I ask my clients to *talk back* to the automatic ‘first draft’ thoughts their brains offer them.
To ask themselves powerful questions like:
“But what if I could focus on me today, even in small ways - what might I try?”
“What if I'm just wrong about this? What would that be like?”
“The ‘future me’ who figured this out - what did she start to do differently?”
When you start examining *possibilities* rather than believing your automatic “first draft” thoughts, your brain starts to problem solve.
By asking yourself powerful questions about what could be possible for you, you start to come up with little changes.
“Maybe I can carve out ten minutes in the morning to make a loving food plan for the day, and to take a few deep breaths to calm my nervous system”
“Maybe I can start putting those tempting snacks in a bowl rather than eating them out of the bag. This way I get to enjoy them without feeling deprived, and I create a visual cue not to overeat”
“What if I committed to leaving just two bites behind per meal? How does that stack up over a day? A week? A month??”
I promise you this: the littlest changes compound into HUGE results.
And, when you’re willing to see your automatic “first draft” thoughts for exactly what they are - optional offerings from your brain that you can either believe OR question and rewrite - you start to find the little changes that will make all the difference for you.
